As Qohen works toward the theorem with increasing twitchiness, he manages to form a couple of human connections that draw him out of his monklike code mania. One scene in particular really felt fresh to me - like something I'd never seen in a movie, or even a Terry Gilliam movie before: where the hero describes the principle event of his life. Quohen has been depressed and angry for a long time because he keeps hoping for a phone call that will assure him that life has meaning (shades of "Godot"); when it finally arrives, he muffs it and spends the rest of the movie beating himself up.

Qohen, like many, is focused on the calling and as a result, leads a meaningless life. After all his talk of searching for meaning, he isn't searching, he's waiting to have meaning handed to him. Smart car Frogger Tetris graphics/gameplay painted with vivid strokes but no vision. This is combined with classic Gilliam themes: an oddball protagonist, a dreamer of dark things, subservient to a purposely generic higher power, and longing for escape; the question of whether what is real is what's out there or what's inside oneself; omnipresent Big Brother style surveillance. Essentially operating under the guise of a lesser Brazil, Gilliam's latest takes on the paradox of isolation in a world connected by fibre optics, the atomisation of society, the transcendence of faceless corporations from the geographic to the facets of our personal lives. It's nice to see that world again on film, even if it really doesn't feel like we're heading in that direction. All of this is percolating while the best cast including Christoph Waltz, Melanie Thierry, David Thewlis, and Tilda Swinton make up a supporting cast with the best lines in a film since Brazil. I cried when I watched Lost in La Mancha. In The Zero Theorem Gilliam reaches for the heights of his greatest work, and almost makes it. The Zero Theorem is like the pessimistic version of the Unified Field Theory. She apologizes for what she has done and asks Qohen if he would leave with her. The Zero Theorem is way too claustrophobic for a futuristic sci-fi trip, that's only because – let's face it – writer-director Terry Gilliam these days is driven to show producers he can deliver his far-flung ideas under budget. So, basic non-spoilery plot. The Zero Theorem(2013).

Leth is a bald, pale, twitchy ascetic who shuns social interaction in favor of haunting an abandoned, derelict church where he waits out his days for a phone call he's convinced he'll receive telling him the purpose of his life. Did I love this movie? But I wanted to make a point that this body isn't governmental. Awkward protagonist, dystopian future, love interest, people in silly costumes, lots of colours, steam-tech gear, and strange delivery-people. He hosts a party because he loves having people around, but feels essentially alone. People who live their lives doing their day-to-day things and believe there is a higher power. Because the experiment reaches into the depths of the human mind, no environment is off limits. But the world is always a mixture of technologies. Audience: boys' night. Style: fairy tale, satirical, stylized, humorous, sexy... This one follows that trend for some time, but there comes a point when even this gets excessive and I felt like I was watching a spy kid movie. If you like The Zero Theorem, you might also like British Science Fiction Films, Voltage Pictures Films, Existentialist Films, and Stage 6 Films Films. Audience: date night. Melanie Thierry is funny and bright as Bainsley, and Lucas Hedges, who plays Bob, really digs into his character and brings us a warm breathing person in what could have easily been a caricature. It feels surreal, but also not entirely implausible. A gorgeous woman who turned in a brilliant performance that near enough saved the film and made it worth watching. It's more, how do you get the people that might like what you do—and they're not always fans yet—how do you get their attention? The mentally handicapped Jobe is trained by a scientist via VR headset to become a superintelligence that can no longer be controlled and mutates into a serious threat to humanity. Mar 20, 2015It's the equivalent of biting into a delicious looking cake to find only air. Spectacular at times, meandering at others. Bob says that Bainsley was paid by the hour to be with Qohen. Sure, Qohen Leth is an entity cruncher who has been awaiting a phone call all his life that will provide him with the meaning of life.
