I must confess to enjoying it immensely and while I did get to know "the second Mrs. Astor" the Astor family themselves definitely did not get as much limelight as I anticipated. How they met when she was 17 and he was in his 40s and divorced; all the social mores of the upper upper class; how they married soon after she turned 18; how they went on an extended honeymoon abroad, partially to avoid the censure of their social class and the hounding by the press; and how they were to sail home on the Titanic. This book started off quite strongly and gave off vibes similar to Wild Women and the Blues. And Folks -- that last 1/2 was great! As I listened to the story on audible I fell in love with the characters, the narrator and everything about the book. I'm not sure if this is because I read on my kindle and the physical book makes it more clear of the difference or what. So I personally know someone who knew someone who knew someone who at least tried to talk to Madeleine Astor in the immediate days after Titanic went down. Newspaper articles at the time of her engagement claimed that she was anywhere from seventeen to twenty-one. In spite of some happy moments (few and far between), the overarching part plot of the novel is Jack Astor's death.
I put an imagined conversation between Madeleine and Katherine Hurd in the story, based on the facts I learned via the archives of the Missouri Historical Society, which has Katherine Hurd's collection of papers and notes. Followed by intimate excursions, driving along the coast and picnicking on small hidden beach by the sea. If you like leisure paced novels which really don't have any cliff endings or suspense elements to it this book definitely fits the bill. Told in rich detail, this novel of sweeping historical fiction will stay with readers long after turning the last page.
