And Fletcher is absolutely brilliant in her portrayal. The film comes with remarkable and extraordinary performances by Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. Of course the most dramatic shots deliver the front-to-back definition of scenes involving people or objects that appear close in the foreground, giving way to a long distance view in the background. McMurphy is a man who can't be contained, and when the powers that be try to do so by putting him in a mental hospital, he shakes up the system and goes toe to toe with the nurse who runs her ward with an iron fist. I didn t think the Blu-ray looked bad, but I didn t think it was a significant step up over the DVD, either. It is essential viewing.

Actually, the occasional shot looked stronger on Blu-ray such as the first scene with McMurphy and Chief on the basketball court but most of them were a wash. McMurphy shows the astounding difference one courageous person can make in many lives. Black levels are not affected by this and remain deeply rendered for the most part.
