We return through Lakeside and Santee on our way back to Woodglen Vista Western Loop. Here is a great ride called the Great Western Loop. We return via Del Dios Highway past lake Hodges and back on Via Rancho Parkway to the park where we started. The Great Western Loop. The Great Loop Route
I didn't think there was much good cycling around San Luis Obispo โ except for the tough ride from SLO to Avila Beach via Prefumo Canyon and See Canyon. Location: Pine Valley, CA. But all good downhills end, and you are faced with a brutally steep little hill to exit. At about mile 9 you pass a beautiful granite slab on the left with water cascading down it. On the way back along Old Stage Road, simply explore the many roads that head off to the sides. The upper (Painted Cave) part has some fantastic steep riding, then finishes along a single-lane road through a lovely wood. After breakfast enjoy a picturesque ferry ride across San Diego's Harbor to the Island of Coronado. From here, the climb is about 9.
My friend Steve Correll has a very different recollection of the climb, thinking it was really quite hard, so perhaps my memory is just flawed. This is the big climb in the area, finishing under the rocky, barren slopes of Mt Shasta. Turn right on Adelaida Road and follow this for just over a mile. This is the easiest 40 miler you will ever do. As you ride through Del Mar you'll see several steep roads leading away from the sea; in particular, Del Mar Heights Road is a fun little climb that leads to a neighborhood to its south that has several steep little roads to explore.
