The geography time is mostly reading, actually. We Switched from MFW to Sonlight for High School. I knew with a baby coming last fall that I wouldn't have time to get to the library for additional books and sure enough I didn't get there at all for months at a time after Emma was born. I purchased Adventures for my advanced 1st grader (it's designed for 2nd/3rd grade) used from the My Father's World Used Curriculum Exchange group on Facebook. When we first began our homeschool journey in 2015, I bought Exploring Countries and Cultures and God's World from A to Z from My Father's World.
Another thing was that I downloaded a couple IG's from SL and while I know a lot of people like how everything is laid out and scheduled, but the word Wendy used- micromanage- seems appropriate. I have rowed a week here and there during the summer and once for Thanksgiving. I spend at least an hour of read aloud time a day (I'm doing ECC for a second time with twin 5th graders and an 8th grader). There were some free options when I started homeschooling fourteen years ago, but free usually meant online, and I've studied early childhood brain development for too long to be ok with all screen curriculum. Use MFW and the plan is a realistic amount of daily work. The family learning cycle has been wonderful! Talk about disappointing. This J's where its hard to coteach. We also love doing crafts and hands on stuff, and it sounds like there is considerably less of that with SL. After researching, using free samples, shopping at used curriculum stores, and even buying bits and pieces, we came full circle back to My Father's World.

I like the cheap little set of books by Ruth Beechick called The Three R's on Amazon. So there's the "newbie" point of view and the "veteran" point of view and that plays a lot into how the amount is perceived. It was repetitive and it didn't seem like he was retaining much. They are simplified so that they are doable - in other words, you get stuff that's been practiced by other families to get it right. I have a friend who compared SL and MFW, and chose SL last fall because she wanted lots of options to create her day. I was at a natural end point with FIAR. I'm leaning towards Sonlight or My Father's World for next year. I do use several free homeschooling resources as supplements and a few subjects, but not my core subjects and not until until my kids were in at least second grade.
We have completed MFW 1 & K, and are currently working on MFW 1 & ADV. Thankfully we were able to utilize the tips for homeschooling on a tight budget and rent most of it from a friend! The next year we switched to MFW and loved it. MFW just works so well for us and ALL of the children are able to handle it and my voice doesn't go out on me anymore. From what I have seen the MFW is pretty much open and go, no planning involved other than making sure you have supplies for the hands on activities? Supplies are found at home or grocery store/StuffMart. As parents we are encouraged to read aloud. This meant that we wasted money on materials. However I identified with a number of items on their list of "Reasons NOT to use Sonlight":giggle Obviously, tons of people love SL & it works for their families. What helped you decide to switch to MFW? We used Sonlight for 2 years and are using MFW this year (in a relaxed manner). The history itself did not start with creation. MFW provides a fantastic framework for our homeschool.
