I have no doubt that newcomer Shelby Van Pelt's Remarkably Bright Creatures will be that book for many this summer... Whimsical, immersive and vibrantly written, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a truly tender masterpiece about grief, letting go of the past and giving yourself the permission to dream of a future. A unique and luminous book for fans of Eleanor Ray's The Missing Treasures of Amy Ashton (2021). This is an utterly charming book. Marcellus is much smarter than he lets on. It is hard to imagine that Remarkably Bright Creatures is Van Pelt's debut novel and I am excited to see what the author shares next. I absolutely loved it. He can't keep a job, his music career is on hold, his girlfriend kicks him out of their home. Cameron is not initially all that likable. That might sound like this story is a sad one and that the characters are hopeless, but that's not at all true.

For me, the story started off slowly but was riddled with surprises as the chapters unfold. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. I won't spoil it but it is safe to say that tears were shed in a way that I have not cried over a book being so beautiful and moving since grade school and my time with Charlotte's Web or Bridge to Terabithia.
