A story about home, community, and hope, inspired by the rebuilding of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in 2017. The gags include effectively placed callbacks to seemingly incidental events (the "stress lizard" brought in on testing day is particularly funny) and a lampoon of after-school-special–style problem books. As an adult reader, I found The Poet's Dog to be alternately charming and frustrating, not sure what to make of this book. He takes them back to the house he shared with Sylvan. Was it the right choice? Here is The Ox-Cart Man which Sylvan read to Teddy. In the end, I decided to read it as a fairy tale and that helped quiet the the questioning voices in my head, allowing me to enjoy MacLachlan's book as I know young readers will.
