Mad Honey is told in alternating POVs and a non-linear timeline by Olivia and Lily. And then I remembered, "Oh wait, that's the chapter that Jodi wrote. " And when the bees there forage those plants, the honey that is created is almost hallucinogenic and very physically dangerous if you ingest that honey. Asher has a new girlfriend, Lily who is new to NH. He was like, "You definitely came the right year. " Olivia is the single mother of Asher, a teenage boy who fell deeply in love with Lily, a girl who recently was new at his school. Olivia is formerly a battered wife, and so she bears this memory. One mom is grieving over the death of her child and the other mom is grieving that she might lose her child forever to the prison system. I loved how important the themes were in this book.
I am cisgender and while I support the right of every person to live as their most authentic self, I have no personal experience with gender transition, so I will not weigh in on that aspect of the book, but if anyone else wants to do that in comments, I welcome it. After they arrive, Asher immediately wants to leave. "He is right; you don't ever recover from losing someone you love-even the ones you leave behind because you're better off without them. " Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. Mad Honey is a perfect book club read! Overnight, the world is theirs. Lily's story is told backwards. Those are the males. Learning about Lily's history with her father was heartbreaking and following her as she transitioned to a woman was beautiful. Whether it's race or whether it's religion or privilege, we're losing our minds with our inability to understand each other. I couldn't get her in part because my own children are now in their late 20s, so I'm 10 years out of teen culture. Such an emotional storyline that tugged on the heartstrings, I couldn't put this one down.

And finally, what I realized was that instead of making Lily a popular teen, I could make her kind of like the outcast that I was when I was in high school. If you have read her books then you know that she consistently tackles the hard to talk about issues. Mad Honey is one of the most successful author collaborations I have read. And Jenny's story leads me into something I've been dying to ask.

This one felt like it was all over the map trying to make too many statements. But I like to start with kind of a nerdy question at the top, and I'm going to ask you first, Jenny: How would you describe Mad Honey to a listener in one sentence?

There are some great opportunities for learning and understanding (No spoilers here) about some serious topics in today's society but the execution was off, off, off! So, when I discovered this, I was like, "Boom, here's the title. " Along with the alternating chapters, Lily's story is also told backward, which took some getting used to. And when Asher is suddenly being questioned by the police and charged with the murder of Lily, there's a part of her that wonders, "What don't I know about this person I love so much? " Mad Honey is a collaboration between Jodi Picoult, an author whose books I've read and loved, and Jennifer Finney Boylan, a new author for me. Thank you to Random House & Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book. And it is no surprise that she is loved, deeply and sincerely, by a boy named Asher whose mother is the other primary point of view character, named Olivia. Mad honey is a very specific kind of honey that comes mostly from the Nepal region. I knew from the first page it was going to be a binge worthy book! Hey there, book lover. Having a trans co author gave this story an authenticity that otherwise would have been lost.

The second storyline centers around Lily, her backstory (which is heartbreaking), the months leading up to her murder, and Asher's murder trial. And then, of course, you realize it's Jodi Picoult's story, or at least partly Jodi Picoult's story, so of course that's what we're going to do. I would recommend Mad Honey to anyone over 21.
But the novel also chronicles Asher and Lily's relationship, as well as Olivia's terrible marriage. As with all her other novels, Picoult has gone out of her way to do her research. Kayleigh F, Reviewer. That being said, it's gut-wrenching at times as the book does delve into some pretty tough topics, but they are handled sensitively and compassionately by the authors.
I haven't personally interacted with her yet, but you can bet I'm going to. She is shunned and loses most of her business as everyone decides Asher must be guilty. And it is such grueling work. And to have it be about a child, not a romantic partner. Privately, Olivia wonders whether Asher has inherited some of his father's rage.
There is also guilt that she even considers that her son harmed his girlfriend. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. While I purchased books from her backlist (still on my TBR bookshelf TEEEHEHEEE! ) Lily, too, has moved to Adams to start over. My only complaint is that the ending seemed too abrupt for me. Zero interest in bees and I still loved this book and so glad I went into it blind. But Caitlin, whose own demons have been hinted at, will not be so lucky. She even feels some guilt that she has kept her son from his father. But Lily's story goes backward. And when Jodi said, "I think I want to make Olivia a formerly abused wife, " I was a little bit scared. Did Asher kill Lily? You may not have heard of Jennifer Finney Boylan but she is well known to own-voices readers.
