This was a wonderful addition to stories about the famous and not so famous passengers whose lives were cut short by the Titanic's sinking. In reality, the sinking of the Titanic was a footnote in this novel. The author tries very hard to breathe some life into the story but, given that she also tries to stick to the facts, there is simply not enough material. Sadly, their return trip to America is on the infamous Titanic and Jack Astor becomes one of its many victims. For the most part though, Madeleine's narration and behavior in the novel read as far more mature than her age would suggest. In 1910, Jack Astor was one of the richest men in the world. Overall, a solid historical fiction book about John Jacob Astor's wife, Madeline, but it was a bit too low key for my tastes. The romance wasn't written particularly well, and the book went into way too much detail about how invasive the press was (the author channeled Princess Diana too much). Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Madeline discovers she is pregnant. I realized this story wouldn't touch on Madeleine's interest in women's suffrage or the support she lent the "twilight sleep" campaign before I'd finished the prologue, but I was surprised at the ardency of the romance Abe presented her readers. Goodreads review published 10/10/22. I think she was stronger and braver then she realized, because she had to her and for her child. A great love story yet a horrible death. However, as POV is something many readers are picky about, I'd only recommend it to readers of historical fiction who are patient with a "stylized" approach to mixing first and third person. When the nosey newspaperman upset Madeline, he teaches her how to handle them. Feb Notes from a Small Island. People refer to it as false hope, but I think that's misleading, because the feeling itself is painfully true. The book seemed a bit low on excitement.

Her family is happy and eager for the marriage, there are no real obstacles, so the greatest "ordeal" she has to suffer, are the obnoxious paparazzi, what a sad life. Historical fiction is fascinating because you learn so much from. Even though it was a fictionalized account, this book still tugged at my heartstrings all of the way through. As the Carpathia surged into port in New York, Carlos, struggling against a burly pair of seamen attempting stop him, tossed his handwritten story—wrapped in waterproof material, concealed in a cigar box that was covered in champagne corks so it would float if it accidentally fell into the sea—off the side of the Carpathia as she moved toward shore. I do wish that this book had gone on a little longer to see how she and her child's life developed. I love how the author was able to paint her realistically.
I had a lump in my stomach and felt like crying when Jack put Madeleine in life boat four and him and their loyal dog Kitty perished. After their marriage, the Astors were snubbed by their social peers because of his divorce and remarriage and her age…though many of the mothers would have loved for their daughters to marry him because of his astounding wealth.
