This is true when it comes to short story writing, novel writing, or even academic writing. If Butler had just stuck to her tale of an apocalyptic world, I would have loved it, but all the Earthseed business ruined it for me. There are hundreds of writing rules, thousands of words to know, and millions of possible ways you could write a simple message. And it is believable. She soon sold her first stories and by the late 1970s had become sufficiently successful as an author that she was able to pursue writing full-time. It still feels contemporary. It makes the writing clunky instead of uniquely descriptive. Butler brings it home; she recreates it here and it is absolutely terrifying.
