Note: We have had customers who have cut away exterior transom glass to get at the rotted wood inside, and they have done this without removing the outdrives and mounting brackets. We hope this blog post on how to reinforce a fiberglass boat transom has been helpful. Make certain that the joints between each layer are staggered by at least eight times the plywood layer thickness.

Ten years ago, I replaced the plywood transom in my 16′ aluminum fishing boat. As the epoxy cures, screws in the plywood sheets will keep them in place. You'll be able to get the precise size of the transom. The repair is made using our CPES™ to treat whatever wood that remains (stopping the rotting process and hardening the wood), and then vacant areas inside the stringer are filled with a soft, pourable mix of our Layup & Laminating™ Epoxy Resin and sawdust. Damaged cores are typically delaminated and very moist. Here is an approach that has merit if you will be working alone and wish to accomplish the repair in bite-size pieces. When using epoxy, mix it when it is still wet on the plywood.

Fit a circular saw with a carbide-tipped plywood bit and set the cutting depth to slightly less to allow for some variation in this dimension. Step 2: Gain Access to the Transom. Transoms not only support the weight of the motor, they maintain the shape of the boat, they are a mounting point for holdowns, towing eyes and other accessories.

First, you can use fiberglass tape to reinforce the seam where the transom and hull meet. The transom was made up of one very thin fiberglass hull transom sandwiched between two ¾" mahogany layers and bolted together. Set the first cut sheet of plywood into place against the back of your boat's splash well and remove any excess epoxy that squeezes out around the edges. NOTE: We use drilled holes, but one of our web readers (thank you, Jeffrey Manosh) suggests slits cut with a circular saw across the deck, that is, side to side—beam to beam, which would allow more air through, easier application of the CPES™ and L & L™ Resin and better ventilation for cure time.

After you remove the transom, don't throw the parts away as you may need them for reference. The rot process is often from the top down. 3 of Fiberglass Boat Repair & Maintenance (free download). There would be enough deck left to supply good lateral support (most fore and aft support on boats is provided by the hull), and of course, the slits would be filled in with Fill-It™ Epoxy Filler when treatment of the core is completed. And don't even think about using the standard polyester resins. And, they must be able to let water out of the hull, without letting it back in. Acrylic epoxy paint to match the color of your boat's stern. If you want complete protection, you will pre-drill fastener holes and treat them with CPES™ before installing the screw or nail. Finally, attach the core to the hull with cloth tape tabs attached to each side and bottom. The proper technique varies depending on the boat. You'll want to use the safe ones, not the nasty ones like acetone. Repeat the procedure with the remaining plywood sheets. It offers three different notch sizes to fit your needs.

Step 6: Tab Transom Core to Hull. Aside from awesome effects, you don't need to sand and grind between plywood sheets. These are better, of course, than the cored stringers where the wood is the main structural support, but result in a more costly boat. The laminate is compromised, and unless repaired the blisters will get worse. If there is wood involved and you suspect deterioration or rot, you can apply CPES™ first to the holes, but this will mean waiting for at least a week for the carrier solvents to evaporate away. Keep the records for later reference. Cloth, or heavier if you wish. Even though it is dangerous, you can prevent adverse events by following the proper procedures. Epoxy is applied evenly over the bottom and sides of the hull. As a result of its robustness, it can be relied on to stay between sheets of plywood. Step 8: Apply the final coat of epoxy paint/primer and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before taking your fiberglass boat transom into the water again. Epoxy in mass generates heat and becomes unusable if not spread out quickly into thin films.

If the fiberglass skin is 1/8″-thick, the width of the bevel will be at least 1 ½" long. Limit the repair area. Plan a cut with future restoration in mind. The finishing touch still involves epoxy; you have to fill in the gaps. Again, this is primarily a power boat problem because the impact forces generated on the bottom of the hull require substantial stringer reinforcement. You may make uniform-size beads with a caulking gun while spreading the epoxy. This particularly true if the varnish is a polyurethane, which seems to stick to CPES™-treated wood particularly well.
How To Reinforce A Fiberglass Boat Transom Repairs
Although CPES™ will partially displace light moisture, in almost all instances it will be necessary to use some sort of drying method. You then have to cut away the top of the stringer. One way or another the repair process outlined above will work on just about any wood/steel engine mount configuration where the wood is accessible. However, if you are concerned that this will not present the same strong structure as it was originally, we recommend you use the steps shown below to restore the deck. The CPES™ will penetrate deeply, especially on cut edges, and prevent the wood from absorbing enough moisture to support fungal and bacterial activity. The unthickened epoxy should be applied on the exterior of the transom. The first thing you need to know is that one of the most common problems with transoms is rot. Sometimes this can be repaired by treating the existing wood or by drilling access holes in the glass laminate and injecting CPES™ (Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer) and, if the damage is severe, Layup & Laminating Epoxy Resin™. The fiberglass on some stringers approaches ¼″ in thickness, in which case the wood interior is almost redundant. When you are running the bead to fill any voids when you set the plywood in, you can use a caulking gun (not the frame and removable tube type you get a discount stores, but a real caulking gun, available at paint stores) to make the bead more uniform and useful. Make a template of the transom and use it to layout the plywood layers.
Cut around the outline. Cut as many sheets of plywood as are necessary to fill the transom void and fit snugly. Repeat this process, screwing each successive sheet of plywood to the previous sheet with wood screws, until the void is filled with snugly fitting sheets of plywood, all epoxied around the sides and bottom. If your fiberglass skin is unusable, plan to laminate a new fiberglass skin over the core with multiple layers of fiberglass and epoxy. Allow at least 3 days to pass after the CPES™ treatment for the carrier solvents to evaporate away before proceeding with the wood and L & L Resin rebuild. Step1: Cleanse the fiberglass with denatured alcohol. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
