The First to Die at the End was a great prequel to They Both Die at the End. The company may know the day someone dies, but not the how or when, instilling a visceral paranoia through the pair. While I enjoyed the story and the characters, it did feel like the story lagged a bit in the middle. In the last book we had Mateo & Rufus, the duo I officially fell in love with and this one has Orion & Valentino. Trigger warnings: domestic abuse, murder, homophobia. This description of the story is in itself inefficient as the book is so bizarre and weird it is somehow beyond any accurate description. It was moving and meaningful. They had had someone to live for, but they both forget about it. He's from the Bronx. I devoured it on the day it arrived in the mail. It's an incredibly character-driven story, as Adam Silvera's books usually are, and it allows us the simplicity of existing beside these characters, of following their very real, very tragic stories.

What hurt me most about They Both Die at the End is that, same as Rufus and Mateo at one point, I completely forgot that they were on their End Day. We don't learn anything new about how Death-Cast works. But he knows that he has to make the most of this day, it's his last chance to get out there and make an impression. Yet in all of that, maybe even in spite of everything, the story bursts with moments of joy, of tenderness, of wonder, of love in different forms, and, most importantly, of hope.
