I've seen this book referred to as one of the 'fathers' of the grimdark genre, and as a grimdark fan I knew it was something that I definitely wanted to read. I see a lot of DNF (did not finish) reviews for The Darkness That Comes Before stating that it was "boring" and "too slow", I totally get these points.. the start was freaking boring and so slow, I thought I was going to turn 90 before it got exciting, however it did get extremely interesting and I'm so glad I continued on with the story, I actually think I loved it by the end. Leweth is wounded, and Kellhus leaves him for the Sranc, feeling no remorse. My friends and I have a category of literature that I enjoy, basically calling it "Lit grad student masturbation" (e. g. Any one of these things I could decide not to let bother me in a book I was otherwise enjoying; all of them together is getting a bit much. Rejected by his people, he seeks vengeance against the former slave who slew his father, and disgraced him in the eyes of his tribe. Observational aside: I will rarely reread books. A simple click of the ratings button shows a vast number of in betweens. This story starts out slow, and although it does start picking. All these characters (along with other, more minor ones) have fascinating inner thoughts and observations that really enrich them and lend further depth to the world they populate. Well, I'm glad I finally put all of that aside and gave it a go because in my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. They are also masters of combat, their training making them nearly Jedi-like in their abilities. It's a series that is an experience, one that pushes you as a reader and for that, I love this book. In fact, Bakker liberally uses real Western civilization history and philosophy (with some aspects of Middle Eastern thought) and reshapes it especially for his world. The Shriah's Envoy, however, remains undecided: the Scylvendi are as apostate as the Fanim, after all.
At the back of the book, with capsule descriptions of all the factions and religions and nations; still, reading the first few. Sometimes Bakker has too many fragments, but they weren't too obtrusive. The rest of the world is just a sacrifice to their god. With the Fanim rulers of Shimeh girding for war, the only possible way they can reach the holy city is to become Men of the Tusk. I love violence and I'm actually complaining that this was a tad too violent.. ).
All of these characters - and a few others - are well fleshed out, especially as the larger plot develops over the course of the year we spend with them. Epic fantasists don't always adequately explore the socio-political implications of their magics, often doing little more than grafting sorcery onto cultures that would be exactly the same if magic didn't exist; but Bakker has clearly given this considerable thought, and convincingly portrays not just the ways in which magic is an integral part of his society, but the ways in which that society has, necessarily, found ways to limit and control it. It seemed to fall into a predictable pattern of long, drawn out conversations which inevitably would lead to a pivotal climax, only to break right before said climax; suddenly jumping to other matters which would only restart the cyclic dribble. The book follows multiple characters, but it doesn't follow the clear delineation by chapter break that GRRM does - it's like an MTV jump-cut version of character POV, as Bakker switches without warning between characters from one section to the next.
He's really only barely human, devoid of passion, pure of intellect, absolutely innocent -- not in the sense of blamelessness or sinlessness (he's neither), but because he exists outside of human custom and convention, beyond human notions of good and evil. There's great imagination here and Khellus' methods are a fresh and entertaining idea. With Cnaiür at his side, Kellhus charts the souls of all those present, calculating the ways he might bring them under his thrall. This novel, while a putative fantasy, is so remarkably well-conceived and executed that it feels more like a historical recollection of a lost world. Of course, the first caste-nobles to arrive repudiate the Indenture, and a stalemate ensues. But then, perhaps the other two books in the series are better and pick up the pace - at least, that's what I've read to be the case.
Despite his misgivings, Cnaiür believes him, and they resume their journey. About certain things and doesn't realize it, the only circumstance his training can't control. It's impressive, honestly, just how much Bakker manages to pack in. What Achamian discovers is a mystery that is potentially at the heart of this newly-declared Holy War. The setting is an interesting one: magic is a taint that manifests itself in random individuals, who are then found and trained by one of the many Schools of magic. To complicate matters even further it seems agents of the long forgotten No-God might also be taking an interest in the happenings! The thoughts of characters' often digress into philosophy or history and it never feels unneeded or unnecessary, instead serving to expand our perspective of the character and the world. The chess game of the gods is only important from the pieces' perspective, after all.
