My Father's is also less expensive than many others because it's a one classroom style, meaning you only have to buy one curriculum for your whole family (depending on age of course), so your cost will be much lower. I have always wanted to try Sonlight, but the cost was prohibitive.

I tried to add that. Used My Father's World curriculum. The Bible feels tacked on to me. If you like Abeka overall, but it is way too intense for your homeschool, MFW is a great alternative. MFW incorporates all these too, but with less packed into a day. My father's world vs sonlight. History is lighter than Sonlight -( I majored in history in college, I love history so I loved Sonlight. When I talk to someone who plans to use SL, I encourage them to use a core when their child is at the older end of the recommended age range.
Some of the books have become ultimate favorites that I now read to all of my children as they get older such as My Father's Dragon, but I wasn't a huge fan of quite a few of them. In history, readers, art, music, and of course, Bible, Christ is at the center. Its hard to choose for Jeffrey, but o worth a lit based curriculum wouldn't fit his learning style. Also, I would really appreciate hearing what an average day using ECC consists of, if someone would be so kind as to share. I use a lot of Sonlight (but I pick and chose the read-alouds because I use a different history curriculum). I like that Sonlight begins with American History, a more accessible touch point for younger students than ancient contexts and cultures.

Sonlight was originally written for missionaries. 2014-2015 MFW Ancients/young'un- MFW preschool, reading books. Updated 2021- High School. It's a little harder to combine in that program but not impossible. And I had the option of choosing which books to read in which language without having had invested a lot already. But we basically did just the history, read-alouds and some readers. Some of the missionary books have rough endings (they die), but my DH reads those aloud after my 3 yo is in bed.
Everything has meaning! So I got out my kids' notebooks, and sure enough, we have done a few! I could work ahead on days when things went very well, and only do a few things on days when we were too busy with everything else in our home, but catch up easily on anouther day when all went well.

I like that with MFW I can get most everything done even with 6 children of varying ages. I felt like almost every time we went to read it was about something negative and not wholesome. I like the idea that MFW leaves more room to supplement if you want to, and that I wouldn't be weeding out material b/c there is too much to go through, but I just wanted to hear from anyone who's had a chance to use both and what you thought! They say, "you can always add stuff on, " and I guess they even have a list of suggested activities, but I only have so many hours in the day.... yeah. Thanks for all of the suggestions! The geography time is mostly reading, actually.
I'm sure w/ time it would be 2nd nature, but I much preferred the layout of MFW's lesson plans. Too many of the books were introducing topics that I wanted to wait until 3rd or 4th grade for. In 1st, Bible stories are used to teach phonics. From one relative newbie to a veteran. For Core 1 there are a number of good books. Another program you might want to look at if you haven't already is Heart of Dakota. And if I bought the core, there wasn't a lot of money left over to get some in Spanish.
DD 2013 Valedictorian of tiny PS; 10 years home school. I've said this on the board before and hope it doesn't get old, but my dd cried when we finished ADV because it was such a great year. The science experiments are science experiments. Literature breaks through the awkwardness and allows us to dig into both the good and bad of life. MFW is not active on social media. Am I making sense at all? We could be done by noon. There is plenty of reading as with SL in the form of parent-led readings (Bible, history, and science), book basket, student reading practice, and read alouds. My youngest loves fun, colorful curriculum where he can learn and express himself. I have heard that MFW is "easier" or not as deep. I believe in younger years there is not a strong emphasis on it, but that is because the younger years are focused on making learning fun, not on rigorous academia. The ones in MFW are simple, doable, inexpensive, but fun & effective. The family learning cycle has been wonderful! We haven't done any worksheets! "

Our crazy boys are 11, 9, 8, 5 and our sweet twin girls are 2! Which do you like better? I could never keep up and was often behind within weeks of starting a core. Most high school homeschoolers have to buy their math, science, and electives separately anyways, so Sonlight's ability to mix and match and buy a la carte History and Literature items made it so I didn't have books we would not use, like we did with MFW 9th grade.
It only increases from there. I do understand that the Bible, Science and actual read-alouds are read together. Both dc love to be read aloud to and will read on their own when it is scheduled into their days but neither one will pick up a book to read on their own initiative. With MFW, I think age-appropriate learning means that learning actually goes deeper. Well, actually only got through to almost half of K before I stopped- I didn't think my dd was "getting it. " If the library doesn't have that exact book in the list, I can find a similar book on the same topic. Figuring out the sequences of what to buy from Sonlight was a little confusing at first. I found easy-to-implement hands-on activities that were simple but fun. However, these appear to be their 'official' profiles: Twitter. I couldn't do that with SL. I still believe when you are homeschooling a large group of multi-age students, MFW is still a a very good cost per student because of the large one classroom approach, I just can no longer say it is the most budget friendly. As I looked into it further, it included everything that I wanted but without me having to implement it later.
