Because I've never read one that's this insanely intense. Ace of Spades is entertaining, thought provoking, fast paced, adrenaline inducing(my heart beat rate was just sky high), actually thrilling as well as chilling. It's a searing thriller about class, race, identity, and the horrors of surviving high school.

I'd say the greatest strength of Ace of Spades was how I never felt like I had a solid footing when it came to the characters apart from Chiamaka and Devon. "As your Senior Head Prefect, I will work hard to ensure that our final year at Niveus is the best one yet, starting with the Senior Snowflake Charity Ball at the end of the month. I mumble a "sorry" after stepping on some guy's designer shoes—probably worth more than my ma's rent—before making my way to the front, where the senior teachers are lined up, my sneakers squeaking against the almostblack wood beneath. Chiamaka, who is very wealthy, is a straight-A student, Head Prefect, and well on her way to Yale. And I know people across the world will be able to understand a kind of American setting rather than a specifically British one. Word spreads around their school and this is not a good start to their final year with college applications at the risk! Devon, on the other hand, comes from a poor family and really struggles to fit in at the private school. It aims to put a stop to black hate! Our second main character is Devon. In spite of their varying levels of involvement, every character played a part in propping up the current systems that perpetuate harmful, outdated narratives. The only two black students.

Now a Goodreads Choice finalist in Young Adult Fiction! Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé revives a familiar plot line with new twists and perspectives that kept me guessing until the very end. So watching Get Out was really transformative for me. What inspired you to write this story? It also doesn't escape notice that the only two students being targeted, Devon and Chiamaka, are the only two Black kids in their school. Ace of Spades, the upcoming debut novel of Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, has piqued many readers' interest with its early comparisons to Gossip Girl and Get Out. This book definitely feels personal and reading the author's story at the end (and a bit above in the Q and A) shows that she wrote this book during a difficult time in her life. I'm never getting over this book and honestly, I'm not complaining. I had never experienced the feeling of being the only Black face in a white space until I moved to a small town in Scotland for university. There was a narrow focus on micro and macroaggressions but little levity needed to balance this story out. Ace of Spades definitely has more of a Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars vibe, neither of which I'd consider dark academia. Ask any of my friends. This book confronts a lot of hard truths that many non-Black readers may be uncomfortable with at first. It is about Blackness and how that affects everything from how your classmates see you to what colleges you'll get into.

I used to get bullied pretty badly when I was younger and even more than a decade later, it still affects the way I interact with others and how I perceive myself. Whether you enjoy thrillers or not, this is book that packs a punch. Author: Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. The most striking part of this novel is the doubt the protagonists experience, particularly when they guess quite early in the plot that institutional racism is at the heart of the conspiracy against them. Maybe my music teacher put in a good word for me? What I enjoyed about this book is Faridah's skilful way of turning stereotypes on their heads. Devon's father is absent and it is learned he was executed on death row, his mom works three jobs, he has younger brothers and they struggle financial so that he has a chance at education. Devon is much less assertive and much quieter, but his chapters gave us real insight on what it's like to be the odd one out in a school full of rich kids. But for the plot, no. This book was aggressively pitched as Gossip Girl meets Get Out. The novel features an abundance of bad actors, like the truly insidious Ace of Spades campers and the Niveus students; some, like Belle and the legacy families, are guilty of continuing to reap benefits from established systems even though they recognize it's wrong; and others, like Terrell, are pulled into these larger plots because other parts of the system (like health care) already hold them hostage. I absolutely adored her. I start to zone out.
Ace Of Spades Character Introduction
She decides to take her own life into her hands and get the respect she deserves. If Max, Ruby, and Cecelia are all main characters, Chiamaka is the protagonist. Seriously, though—how did social media not play a bigger role in this?? I don't know if the LGBTQ+ rep was own voices but I think Devon's sexuality was handled pretty well but Chi's own was a bit obscure but maybe that's what the author was going for since, she pretty much didn't label her and declared that she's queer. Ace of Spades at a glance. Entirely selfish I know, but I would have loved it if Faridah would have expanded more on the ending and its time jumping epilogue, if only so I could have spent more time with the in-depth characters she created.
Ace Of Spades Book Characters Description
There wasn't enough world building for me as I wasn't transported to the lives of the glamorous elite. And sometimes, you need a dark, twisty thriller to scare the crap out of you. It makes me wonder who the audience of this book truly is, because I would sooner recommend the KKK handbook than I would recommend Ace of Spades to a young Black reader. I will never understand what mandates present tense in YA contemporary novels. Still, I call him a friend, because we've known each other forever and the thought of being alone is much, much worse. Ace of Spades is a truly thrilling book.

Instead, the two main characters were the victims of horrific racism. My high school was made up of mostly Black students, with a minority of white students. What I didn't enjoy: While I loved the message and intent of the book, I didn't like the story itself - I'm sorry!! I recognize the other three standing up there, though I've never spoken to them. Okay so I had really high expectations for this book, considering all the hype and positive feedback from numerous readers, but alarmingly this book disappointed me:/ I found myself reading the same sentence over and over again because I was extremely bored (if you plan on reading this book before going to bed then trust me when I say this, you should not! Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé creates a dark academic story that stands out amongst the masses, she plays with certain tropes found in the Young Adult genre before veering away and turning reader's on a new, much more satisfying path. Chiamaka is very personal to me, because she is me to fault. I don't often read thrillers but if they were all as brilliantly written as Ace of Spades I don't think I could ever put them down. The reason why this is, is because, while Get Out highlighted a common theme in society in a creative and new way, Àbíké-Íyímídé merely shoved every iota of Black trauma she could think of into the plot of Ace of Spades. I hate the feeling of being watched.
Ace Of Spades Book Characters
Teachers vote for their favorites each year, and it's always the same kind of person. So just writing the book and working out how the actual characters were going to get over what was tormenting them was also helping me with my own issues. "Like Devon, I'm from a working class background. The secondary characters, and there are quite a few of them, range from family to neighbors to fellow students and teachers, all who bring their own perspectives to the story. Unless they can catch the culprit, their bright future's remain in the hands of a faceless enemy. The author has a flair of creating an atmospheric and intriguing story, she has this certain way with her words which keeps you hooked. To tell you anymore would be rude, so you should definitely pick this one up for yourself, but I will say that this was *almost* a 5 star read for me. Àbíké-Íyímídé stated she wanted to make Niveus' location vague, somewhere in between America and England (so the ocean??? I also liked how the story explores how class adds another layer of privilege, and this is exemplified in how Chiamaka, who grew up and lives in a rich neighbourhood and how it insulates her, versus Devon, from a poorer neighbourhood, differently navigate and perceive society and the spaces that they occupy. According to Publisher's Marketplace, Iyimide got "a major deal, for seven figures, in a pre-empt, for a two book deal. " A binge (and fast-growing obsession) with Gossip Girl sowed the seeds for the book and inspired Ace's anonymous threats. He flies under the radar and has one friend.
Growing in the poor side of town, he dreams of music and Julliard and, unlike Chiamaka, he's invisible at school and would rather stay that way. With the secrets getting more and more personal and with no sign of stopping, Devon and Chiamaka are determined to stop Aces at all costs. Devon brings so much heart to the story, his great love towards his mother and brothers and his worries of coming out to her and being a disappointment is heartbreaking. Devon is well aware of racial discrimination and unlike Chi, possesses neither the wealth or status to shield himself from its effects. I write this review as a heads-up and to opine on the lack of mention of the amount of romance and sex in the book and in its blurbs. Like none of their friends outside of school would hurt or mock them.
Max, Ruby, and Cecelia are these giant, pale, lighthaired clones of each other, and next to them, my short frame and dark skin stick out like a sore thumb. This bullying and targeting unmistakably reflects and takes root in institutionalised racism and how it has shaped society and the future of Black people until this day. My classmates are lost in the world of their own music, some on keyboards and others with pencils firmly gripped in their hands as they write down melodies on crisp white music sheets. Someone popular, and I am not popular. I try to convince myself that being a scholarship kid doesn't matter, that I shouldn't care. The story starts with Devon, a music prodigy and Chiamaka, head girl and queen bitch. This blog post contains affiliate links. It's just a small thing though, and I think this is an important, well-written book that readers of all ages will like even though this is a YA book. Whatever sells, I guess. "And so, there should be no surprise that the Head Prefect is none other than Chiamaka Adebayo. I went through a time of avoiding the Young Adult genre. This is all i ever wanted, dark academia that deals with racism mixed with a badass female lead. Soon after they start receiving threats from a mysterious entity called Aces.
