On October 4, 2011, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin recognized the Garden Club of South Carolina, the Columbia Garden Club, and the Downtown Breakfast Optimist Club with a proclamation for dedicated service to the City and the State by providing the State Christmas Tree. Dear Garden Club Presidents and Members of the West Sandhills District: The members of the Columbia Garden Club join me in extending a warm invitation to attend the Spring Meeting of the West Sandhills District. Today, however, many club projects raise funds for the Foundation; some of these include the Tour of Homes and the Wine Tasting in years past, and the newest fundraiser, the Garden Party – an art show held in various historic homes featuring South Carolina artists. Rita's Roots Garden Growers Club is created specifically for all areas of the Lowcountry of South Carolina - Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties - particularly for frost and freeze alerts, local resource suggestions and planting dates. The Club has campaigned against development projects that destroy the natural beauty of Aiken and the state. Garden Club of Aiken members have hosted educational events, horticultural demonstrations, fundraisers, and opened their gardens for local and state garden tours. The club received a Historic Aiken Preservation Award for this garden. Columbia Garden Club began decorating the Governor's Mansion Open House in 1981, when Mrs. Richard "Tunky" Riley was First Lady, and has continued that tradition since. Additionally in 2006, the Foundation donated funds for the creation of a permanent stand system for the State Christmas Tree. The Beaufort Garden Club, the second oldest garden club in South Carolina, has been holding its Garden-A-Day event every year since event draws large crowds from South Carolina, surrounding states and even as far as Canada.
