I'm completely intrigued by Madiggan's backstory and I can't wait to discover more as we get further instalments of the Twyst Academy series. ❌ It's way, way, way too fast-burn. The storyline is enticing, intriguing and captivating. Tala is a newly-graduated mage who has just been teleported out of the mage academy into a city where she needs to go on her first job hunt. As the story develops, Tala becomes increasingly self-aware and in control of her mental & emotional states. I just don't know yet.

Or so Maddigan found out. I can not wait to read the next instalment. Can't wait for book 2, Blood of the Mage! That said, the theme dials itself a fair bit back once the protagonist returns from her first caravan round trip. So, I felt this started off really well.. then the whol mage trail thing came in to play and everything just felt really vague. Note that while it hints at story elements, it doesn't contain specifics or spoilers. The sex scene was weird. A complete must read.

From that point on we slowly begin learning about the lore of the world, but never in an exposition dump, but from conversations, advices given, casual mentions we get snippets of what kind of world the MC is in. Then there's Luke, our hulking, yet sweet-natured, protective wizard who isn't lacking in the looks department either. One day, after school, one of the library's bookshelves sends her to another world with a magic school, where she meets Shizuka Tsuchimikado. The bonds of friendship between the boys is also an important part of the story and they feel natural like they've spent a lot of time together. A slice of life fantasy among the antagonists is roughly as appealing as a slice of life fantasy in an Alien Xenomorph hive, imo. In addition to mastering inscription-based skills, human mages progress in loosely cultivation-inspired tiers, but the story reinvents these tropes and dispenses with a lot of silliness: no stinky black goo; no infinitely complex sets of cultivation quests, etc.. Rather than being some weeks-long meditation room black goo ordeal, Tala's advancement to Archon (the critical step beyond initial magehood) is a rite, a collaboration, a challenge, and a triumphant celebration.

There is adventure in spades, romance, very carefully done steamy moments, and above all very good drafted characters. Sigh... And I haven't even got to the other gorgeous boys yet; or Maddigan's discovery of her magic; or the weirdness going on at Twyst Academy and the magic competition from hell.
