You might start by going under the truck and making sure the shift linkage gate is free to move forward and back, and side to side against the rubber bumper. The light on the selector switch will just blink for the 4 low and go back to 2wd or 4hi. Switch 4x4 mode back and forth a couple of times 5. That's why I've decided to put the built 1356 in Big Blue instead of Dad's truck as I don't want to cut the hump in Dad's truck. The thing that worked for me was i drove in 4x4 low because it was stuck in that gear. I had the transfer case rebuilt and everything but those inserts was fine. I just had this problem on my 07 f150. Yes, they both aim to provide the driver traction in slippery conditions, but they are not the same system at all. Jim - Yes, you did qualify it. I just drove 25 Miles in 4wd low at 15 MPH, still SO GLAD for the solution. And yes, im having it in neutral when trying. I took a look at the drawings, regardless of which transfer case i have, i'd have to pay someone to do that sort of work, taking apart my transfer case is wayyyyyy beyond my comfort level and probably tool level. I'll try to take a look at the linkages. The second answer worked. I need to understand this for my plans. Im loading a picture showing some wires sticking out of my firewall near the brake pedal, hoping someone might know what they should be connected to (fingers crossed its as simple as someone disconnecting a wire harness but the wires could also be for a trailer hookup too). Reversed it once went right out of 4w low. Gotta pull the transfer case to even get at it. Tried rocking it, coasting and everything else I could think of to remove any load from the gears. Your suggestion worked on 2006 F-150. This shift can be accomplished while the vehicle is in motion, called 'shift on the fly', although many recommend slowing down under 35 miles-per-hour before moving into 4-high and then keeping the vehicle somewhere between 15-50 miles-per-hour. When conditions permit, your AWD system "lets go" of the engaged axle, and you're back to FWD or 2WD. And to reach 4-low, you first move into 4-high at a slow speed, then put the gear shift into neutral and pull the transfer case shift lever all the way down into 4-low. What is that all for, exactly?

Newer vehicles like this will have a button to push for 4L instead of the old days when you would do it yourself with a heavy-duty mechanical lever in the vehicle. It only takes a few drops of oil to lube that mechanism, but if you feel you have to dump a quart onto it, do us all a favor & put a drain pan below it first. Now the output driveshafts and the input driveshaft between the transmission and transfer case, they will never spin at a 1:1 ither Hi or Low range are a 1:1 ratio on those cases.
I'm not sure what is going on, your truck must be in neutral 2 times, one on your transfer case and the other on transmission. Mine keeps jumping into it going down the road and now it's stuck every time I put it in drive and it puts the trackscontrol off. Christopher - Good news and bad news. Now here's the key: - If your transmission faces the back of the vehicle - and connects to the rear wheels only, you have RWD or 2WD, as only those wheels receive power (like a base GMC Sierra 1500). Has anybody had this problem before? So relieved thank you so much! Most of us have seen vehicles with buttons or dials that allow us to select weather or driving conditions. I tried everything and then I read your post to put it in neutral and then push the 2d button and it finally went out of low 4w drive. I have a 2003 Ford Sport trac it was stuck in 4x4 low Transam77 gave advice on here I put the truck in Neutral switched it to 2wd and put it in Reverse. Now, let's step into the 21st century. Seems to have worked. First the good news - the connector coming out of the firewall is almost for sure the connector to the brake controller.
Is the truck on pavement or dry dirt/clay? The small, stubby lever just to the left of that gear shifter is often something regarded as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. In a sense, the system is comparable to AWD, but you determine when 4WD is needed. When all those traction sensors give up, so does your AWD system.
You folks are amazing! I disconnected the battery for about 15 mins. Overall, 4-low helps you better control your vehicle in these challenging off-road conditions when speed is not an issue. On another note if your vehicle has an alarm. Maybe you can spray some PBlaster in it.

And it would go into Neutral ok, but it wasn't really in the detent on the shifter, so when you let go of the shifter it would slip out of Neutral sometimes.
