By the time the show is over a dozen episodes later, we know everything about Kaiba, and absolutely nothing about the Abyss. It's one of the many things that show how carefully this adaptation was constructed, and how lucky we are to see something of its caliber. There is only one background song I remember and that is in the very beginning when Riko and Reg are ready to descend. They made it so that their best and only friend, even lacking her humanity, would have a place she could recognize as home, as a part of herself. The anime follows a little girl named Rico, who is searching for her long-lost mother in the depths of the abyss. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that although Made in Abyss looks like an alright show on the surface, there is a dark truth: it fetishises children and the author is a pedophile. I missed the hype train on this one, guys. No beating around the bush today, Made in Abyss' finale left me a sobbing wreck who needed to lie down immediately after it ended. You know what's gonna happen. The middle portion of the finale was just one lengthy emotional gutpunch for me. But I think there are other anime that have a similar message or a similar journey that are far superior.

There are just so many little things about the finale that my mind keeps turning to, like that Riko's friends find her balloon in the same exact place where she first found Reg. It builds upon it and harnesses it to bring its characters and audience to a place of reaffirmation rather than misery. You can't even call Reg a character, since his only motivation is saving Rico because … fuck he knows. The Abyss is hostile, dangerous, even lethal, but it has no malice. The best character ends up being not in the main ones, since it's the fluffy bunny, for being the only one with a backdrop story and a lot of knowledge to survive with practical skills instead of deus ex machina bullshit. She does get punished, which makes for an interesting turn in the plot, though the gratuitousness is similar to Evil Dead levels which detracts from the immersion. Fully rejecting half of who you are to embrace one path or the other feels like a denial of self, and it's in learning and struggling to keep those aspects in balance that they should find their place, like their father did. It looks like the adventure continues as Rico, Reg, and Nanachi are back! One day, she finds a robot boy named Reg, and together, they head out to begin their adventure. This felt a bit watered down. It's like when you read a fantasy novel and the protagonist just keeps getting help or getting lucky and that's why the story is able to progress. Likewise, Reg and Nanachi gain the conviction they need to follow her down into the Abyss' depths.

Instead, you have a story of a girl who gives up her boyish qualities to fit in and is immediately rewarded with "the perfect male love interest" and a boy who instead of learning to overcome his shyness retreats into nature never to move past adolescense.
