The reviews are necessarily limited to those that were available to us ahead of publication. The gore was quite as gratuitous as other horror novels but nevertheless unnecessary if you ask me. It was Vera's idea to buy the Itza. Ouch—his candor and bitter honesty kind of blow her mind. I was personally blown away by Rebecca Serle's novel and finished the book up in a matter of days. The first meeting ends like this, without the possibility of meeting again if not for a simple chance. Known as an Itza (obviously an upgrade of Amazon's Alexa) and the strange things which follow, with them repeatedly being delivered purchases they did not buy, followed by odd noises and scratches. Gus Moreno's This Thing Between Us is such a book... Moreno writes about feelings and experiences for which words can never be big enough. But Lily's life begins worryingly to follow in her mother's footsteps, almost without realizing it. How is this connected to the supernatural manifestation which seems to be tracking him both before Vera's death and afterwards? I don't know if this is more folklore or demonizing inventions. Amy knows that the last thing Nick will do is abandon his child after his own disastrous childhood, and she uses this to get what she wants. He lives in the suburbs with his wife and dogs, but never think that he's not from Chicago for one second.

If you are looking for answers to all these questions, you might not get them and the book is a more memorable reading experience because not everything is spelled out. At points it dragged a bit, but I think those parts were needed for the story the author was telling. Just curious if others who have read it had a better grasp on what was going on. I admit to not being familiar with the work of author Gus Moreno, and was eager to read his highly acclaimed full-length debut novel entitled THIS THING BETWEEN US. I have also clocked Cory Doctorow tweeting positively about it and other great reviews by Horror DNA contributor and author Gabino Iglesias. I detect influence of Pet Sematary, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and even Drag Me to Hell (a 2009 movie from Sam Raimi). This thing between us is an Itza, an advanced smart speaker Vera bought for their home; an item Thiago didn't care about, if Vera was happy so was he. Marriage and decline. You see; there is no monster in this book. I definitely, recommend this book to fans of the author Stephen Graham Jones as the author, Gus Moreno, named him as an influence in the acknowledgements. He refers to Vera as 'you', a stylistic choice that might as well appeal to other readers, but one that does zilch for me.

I know what I'm doing. ) Even though Amy ends the book demanding that she, not Nick, gets the last word, there's a clear sense that life for the Dunne family isn't going to be the bright future Amy's telling herself awaits them. This wasn't necessarily scary, but it's super eerie and creepy. I will be checking out other novels by Gus Moreno because my favourite part was the writing style and I want to be re-immersed into that writing again.
Maybe I could glean just a tiny bit more out of it if I did that. Ryle falls back into morbid attitudes, suspiciousness, and obsessions towards a hypothetical feeling and a clandestine relationship between her and Atlas (after finding the note behind Lily's cell phone).
