Much of Cronenberg's previous work has dealt with, as a major theme or a subplot, parasitic invasive physical or mental forces that take over, dominate and often destroy their hosts; in Tom's case, said unwelcome elements could have been there all along, which is why I was less moved by his situation than that of his gentle, sensitive high-school son Jack (affectingly played by Ashton Holmes), who may or may not have inherited certain violent tendencies that he neither chose nor wants to have. I enjoyed this very much but I felt a little disappointed by the ending. The experience of watching this in a crowded theater is exhilarating, as it seems the entire audience is sharing something very, very powerful. The people who think this movie is great are the ones who think that's what the "cool" people are saying. When's the last time you saw Mr. Olympia working at Mel's diner? It's a movie about character. But that being said overall, "A History of Violence" is above par entertainment, and despite it's flaws it's an important piece of filmmaking, one that only further improved the director's already impressive career. Cronenberg's flicks often play out like a series The bad acting, unbelievable circumstances, strange soundstage work, and predictable story make this just a watered down Cronenberg flick without anything strange to keep it interesting. Sarah is afraid of monsters in her closet, and is comforted by her father (who says there are no monsters) and brother (who asserts that monsters are afraid of the light). There are no words to describe how bad this movie truly is. On the other hand, 'A History of Violence' as usual for Cronenberg looks great. Opposite him, Maria Bello is a firecracker, the kind of actress who draws the camera's attention.

In this question of moving on, the audience is left wondering what will happen to Jack. Tom is a family man. I was continuously waiting for the next development to find exactly what was going on. Are you guys kiddding? And the dialog was so contrived & stiff. So to watch Tom Stall battle this, it feels all too real with the world around us today, and Cronenberg really nails it with this interpretation. I've seen worse so I can't give this film anything lower than a 3, but wow, what a disappointment. They do, but it's not long before they're back again with the same claims. Unique in how they really get under one's skin, explore complex and difficult themes not explored an awful lot by other directors without any sugar-coating or excessiveness and how many of them disturb and makes one feel uncomfortable. I was about to walk out and ask for my money back when the movie inexplicably ended.

I am generally appalled by the gratuitous violence of so many films these days, yet still I found myself drawn to the flawed protagonist. However, I had a problems. This movie presents the issues of running from your past, the ongoing consequences of violent actions and a persons struggle for redemption. This is observed in the high-school hallways and on the baseball field, where we see Jack being bullied, teased, and threatened. In spite of its brute force, this is a nuanced movie, with scenes of extreme violence juxtaposed with domestic scenes of calm beauty. This film will make you question everything, absolutely everything. But violence, regardless of the motive, is violence nonetheless. One evening, while Tom is working behind the counter at his diner, two thugs come in with rape and robbery on their minds. But Cronenberg's style has definitely drawn sincere realism to one of the best movies of the year. In a deleted scene, Tom dreams of shooting Carl Fogarty in the diner, but the scene was cut because David Cronenberg thought it was too reminiscent of the director's own previous Videodrome (1983). The need for a conventional resolution pulls him off course during the movie's final third. So I check out what the critics and others are saying and try to give the pros their respect I don't get to the theater as much anymore, but when I do I want my precious time, not to mention almost ten bucks a ticket, to be worth it. Clearly mobsters of some sort, Tom denies all knowledge of them or Joey, but clearly something is amiss. I'm sorry, if you think this movie is predictable and boring, then you weren't watching the same movie as I was. But there's still plenty to absorb, appreciate and admire, although I have a feeling that the biggest discussion and debate--both among the film's surviving principal characters AND its audience--will inevitably occur after the closing credits have rolled. The first portion or so is on the slow side and doesn't draw one in straight away.
