The acting is good but you won't be moved by any of the performances. History Of Violence Fight Scene
Equally the ending's suggestion that violence may often be integral to the creation of the American dream is certainly subversive, but warrants further examination, rather than genre neatness. The question then becomes, is Tom who he says is? If someone else directed it, it may turn commercial. Some have criticised the script, personally found it thought-provoking, taut when needed, darkly satiric in places and subversively witty in others, failing only in the high school scenes. In the first, Bello, the doting Midwestern wife and mom, dons her old cheerleader togs for some playful whoopee with Mortensen, her placid, stalwart hubby. But after that opening shot, the movie halts sharply and abruptly, Josh Olson's (who received multiple nominations for this) script is a bit on the jumbled side, establishing the Stall family is an endurance test for the first 20 minutes or so; it's quite deliberate in it's execution, and in the beginning it feels forced, especially the dialogue which is clunky and overdramatic. These are just some of the questions I came away with after viewing the movie, and there aren't too many other films I have seen lately that have done that for me. Watch with an open mind and don't search for holes and you'll enjoy the film.
