I don't want to go into any greater detail, but I will tell you that all the characters and the story will tug at your heart, but at the same time make you smile. Ah, Marcellus, I adored this grumpy, clever octopus and his story tugged at my heartstrings. With it's gorgeous bright cover, and the fantastic praise from authors like Helen Hoang, I knew I had to get my hands on Remarkably Bright Creatures the day it released. It takes you on a journey about family, loss, love and friendship.

Books offer an escape when the real world feels too stressful or scary, can spark even the most dormant imaginations with fantasy or historical fiction, send a chill up the straightest of spines with a good thriller, melt even the most hardened hearts with a steamy romance novel or give us a chance to walk in someone else's shoes through nonfiction or memoir. What do you imagine they are doing a year from the novel's end? How has writing this story altered your perspective as a writer and storyteller? I am never usually thrilled with books told from animal points of view. What I really enjoyed was how Remarkably Bright Creatures blended a cosy main story with pockets of heartbreak and despair to give it real depth. That's really just a minor quibble. We're glad you found a book that interests you! Marcellus shows his surprising agility and hidden cleverness when the people are absent from the aquarium at night, and I'll leave that for readers to delightfully discover on their own.

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez. Tova is too preoccupied to pay attention to the sweet but awkward flirting of Ethan, the Scotsman who runs the grocery store, but she does get drawn into the complicated life of a young man named Cameron who wanders into Sowell Bay. I think Marcellus is profoundly lonely, perhaps more so than any other character in the book. My grandmother, the one who inspired my main character, Tova…I never actually said goodbye to her. Remarkably Bright Creatures has been described as unique and heartwarming, and it is indeed that. The Four Winds, Kristin Hannah. It was a very good story but I think I had my expectations set too high, hence the four stars.

Marcellus is a captive in the Puget Sound Sowell Bay Aquarium and he may be a genius among octopuses. I loved the uniqueness of the octopus communicating to the reader in journal format, dated by days in captivity. And that coming together takes a while and goes off on a couple of tangents as it meanders along. So quirky and relatable.
