Retro Review: ‘Humanoids From The Deep’
James Horner composed the musical score. Recommendation engine sorted out psychotronic, scary, cult film and suspense films with plots about monster, animal horror, creature feature, mutant, deadly, danger and underwater scene mostly in Horror, Sci-Fi and Action genres. A total seahag of a movie, with its aggressively dumb premise, woeful cast (but be on the lookout for an early appearance by Walton Googins), failed updating of the story that misuses the monsters and sands the ugly edges off the proceedings to presumably make it more palatable for a 1990s cable TV audience (which is absurd since most of us likely saw the original on cable TV in the 1980s and didn't suffer PTSD) result in a movie that's far more offensive than the original ever was. Cue much killing & raping as the creatures burst from the sea & begin their rampage. Some movies like Humanoids from the Deep: Spawn of the Slithis (1978), The Mildew from Planet Xonader (2015), Hydra (1971), Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020), Octaman (1971). Fans of pregnancy horror fare will also find a lot to like about this film.

Humanoids From The Deep Movie
Government scientists attempt to keep the creatures' origin a secret while trying to destroy them. They breathe air and can survive on land. The racists try to get rid of them after they express their intent to sue the town in order to save their land, but doing so would prevent the townspeople from thriving, putting everyone's livelihoods in jeopardy. The scenes don't get too graphic, but they definitely only exist so another pretty, young actress can get naked onscreen. This is where Humanoids from the Deep begins to differ from its predecessors, and as with the monsters that are its subject, its evolution is untempered. The humanoids are the product of some mystified scientific experimentation with what's called "DNA-5, " which is used to genetically mutate salmon so that they grow large and plentifully. The screaming girl tries to make it to the beach but she is attacked and dragged onto the sand by a monstrous figure. This scene is an absolute marvel, foremost because the chaos feels unorchestrated and therefore real. The actress who portrays the Salmon Queen (Linda Shayne) later became a film director. Some mild hiss is present, but crackle, distortion, and dropouts are nowhere to be heard.

Story: Marine biologist Jack Ellway and his son Brandon are drawn to the Polynesian island of Malau to study the effects of recent seismic activity on the area's marine life. When the monsters rip a chunk out of a person, we see everything underneath- blood, bone, organs, etc. Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye1973. Humanoids is variety brand monster mayhem, basically the same as its predecessors, only absent of any prestige. There is no doubt that you can tell that some of the film was reshot, because it really does look like two different films stuck together for a while, a crude and exploitative one, and a more subtle and thoughtful one which is as much about the conflicts between big business and small business [a quick look at all the Tescos popping up all over the country illustrates how timely this aspect of the story still is] and racial aggression, at it is about monsters. Not that either film has anything to do with the other, but there are, what seems to be, unintentional similarities between the two. The 1980 Humanoids From The Deep was a hit though it caused a great deal of controversy. Even though the film could have used a little more humor to put it the wholesome into perspective a little, this surely is fundamental viewing for all fans of trash film-making. No, it's best to leave the questions in the lobby and let the movie be what it is; a pretention-free Corman monster picture that does almost everything a Corman picture is supposed to, when it's supposed to do it. As a psychological thriller, it does a pretty decent job. This Steelbook release offers a nice visual upgrade of Humanoids from the Deep – indeed, it's the best the film has ever looked on home video. Style: exciting, suspense, tense, disturbing, psychotronic... Humanoids from the Deep has all of the above in spades.

Jim's brother is also victimized, prompting Jim to take a personal interest in the matter. His torn-up corpse rises, the girl panics, and at this instant you're expecting a chase; maybe the monster will be fully revealed, maybe only part of him, but there must be a chase of some sort. After a nest of fishmen is discovered in a maze of waterfront caves, Dr. Drake finally drops her cold exterior and turns against her employers to explain just what the hell is going on and where these darn fishmen came from. In the end it made the same point that had been made in countless films before it: if you're a scientist who wants to solve a food shortage problem by making seemingly harmless animals bigger and stronger (be it through a serum, X-rays or genetic engineering), well, you might want to reconsider. The exploitative elements are pretty exploitative, but not in a fun way, except for the Salmon Queen scene. Eventually, a bunch of them create total pandemonium at the annual salmon festival.
So this movie stars lantern-jawed Doug McClure, who was in the Guys in Rubber Monster Suits phase of his career, and Ann Turkel, who was about to start the TV Guest Star of the Week phase of her career. The matching attributes are highlighted in bold. Country: USA, Japan. Speaking of standbys, low-budget standby, the always-heroic Doug McClure, stars as Jim Hill, a small-town sheriff with a couple problems on his hands. Peeters and star Ann Turkel would eventually go public with their complaints about the additions and also asked that their names be removed from the film. Ironically, after all the hubbub the new scenes were cut from the final release and Peters received full credit for a film that went on to become one of the most memorable and popular films in the New World library. It offers a new take on material already covered in movies like Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Horror of Party Beach from years before, but also introduces ideas like a slasher element into the third act.
Well, one small ray of possible hope arrives in the form of Dr. Susan Drake (Ann Turkel), a sexy but chilly blonde biologist working for the new cannery who promises, through the magic of genetic engineering, to replenish the local waters with bigger, faster, stronger salmon. The plot is railroad straight, and the cosmic elements are pretty straightforward. So this represents a step up in quality from his early work for sure. Things go awry when they begin to find things that...

Lynn Schiller as Peggy Larson. The humanoids attack random boats & beach goers killing the men & having their way with the women. The carnival scenes are particularly bad, the clumsy editing not able to hide the fact that footage shot 16 years apart is being used. This is an old-fashioned B movie/exploitation feature. Still, for those who didn't already own it, it's nice package overall. All of this is presented in attractive Steelbook packaging with new artwork. The movie was originally offered to Joe Dante who turned it down.
I don't know why these cheesy rubber monster movies insist on tackling racism and then doing a piss-poor job of it, because it makes all the villager characters in the movie look like ignorant doofuses that are not worth saving. The style and atmosphere of this film are so silly, the violence is so explicit and the plot rips off several other genre classics. The film is a brisk 79 minutes, and the bulk of that is monsters, but the fiery final battle, in which a dozen Humanoids attack a carnival on a pier, is exciting and impressive. Following the success of Jaws a number of filmmakers leapt at the chance to make their own version of an aquatic-based horror flick. But be warned there is a rape scene in the film, for those who need that trigger warning. The filmmakers were making a serious ecological horror film and Corman retroactively tried to turn it into the self-aware exploitation romp that it should've been all along. Chest Burster: The women impregnated by the Humanoids die horribly as the babies rip out of their bellies. The story of a group of vicious sea creatures rising up from the waters near a small fishing community to mate with the local women and killing anybody that got in their way was a modest hit but received poor reviews from critics. Hank blames all of his problems on the Indians and lets everyone know it. Meanwhile Carol is attacked by two of the creatures at home, but manages to defend herself as she kill them before Jim arrives. My guess is this rape sequence, along with the instances of gratuitous nudity and gore, was conceived expressly in the interest of utmost salaciousness, and to this end it succeeds. It all takes place at a small fishing village locale; young women are found raped; dogs are killed; and racial tensions between whites and Indians are escalated due to the happenings. The first two characters to get killed are a boy quickly followed by a Golden Retriever that gets choked out and brutally murdered on-camera by a Fish-Monster.
