Tova, the 70-year-old aquarium cleaning lady, Cameron the 30 something "failure" and of course Marcellus, the 60 pound Octopus. Are they connected by loss, grief or something else? Instead of cliche affirmations, Obama digs deep into the conversation about difficult topics and finds practical wisdom to help readers cope. VAN PELT: But it couldn't have been anything else at that time. What do you think is the reason for the success of Marcellus and Tova's unusual friendship? A 30 year old man who was raised by an aunt who made sure he had a roof over his head, rather than just being thrown into the system, who still blames his mother for all of his life choices and mistakes, is not someone I can feel sorry for. Elizabeth Zott has always defied stereotyping, especially as the only woman chemist at the Hastings Research Institute in the 1960s. And I can't wait to check out the recommended Netflix documentary "My Octopus Teacher. " Tova and Cameron both cope with their grief in different ways. I know I had an incredible amount of luck on my side, but I can easily imagine a scenario where I tucked this character and manuscript away on the assumption that literary fiction narrated by an octopus would never be marketable. I wrote some essays that went on these wild tangents about symbolism that had very little to do with the book, trying to make myself sound smart. Facilitator: Nancy Wilson. While this story was predictable, had numerous chapters that I had to push through from sheer boredom, and a writing style that was odd at times, the story's savior was Marcellus.
