This all plays beautifully with the idea of returning to a village you'd left behind as a teen in tragic circumstances in the 90's, as Joe Thorne did. In The Taking of Annie Thorne Tudor's writing seems more self-assured and honed. I couldn't put this book down, it was full of suspense and mystery. However, 48 hours later, Annie came back, but different. I really enjoyed "The Chalk Man". The supporting characters too were excellent from the fiendish and feisty Gloria, to Brendan the Irish recovering alcoholic.

One night Annie disappeared under very sinister circumstances. Like The Chalk Man, the story jumps between past and present, which is actually something I really like in a book. And yep, those high hopes were met and then some! This time last year I wasn't reading anywhere near as much as usual. It's gory at times (the author does body-horror unnervingly well) but still remains clever.

The events at Arnhill give him a chance to run away from his gambling debts, and hide while he tries to sort out his life. "With The Hiding Place, CJ Tudor has proven that she is a true master at creating perfectly dark, highly propulsive, and tightly coiled mysteries that are utterly impossible to put down. I loved this book and I really, really love the writing style of CJ Tudor. He would be the perfect choice. With any mystery or thriller, one of the greatest aspects of this kind of narrative is the characters and their backstory. I just wish the execution of everything would have been handled better, and I think I would have enjoyed the story a lot more. As I said in my introduction above, I read this book a lot quicker than I was reading other books of a similar length.
His life has been out of control since he was a teenager partly because he needed to know what happened to Annie and if heading back to the place that haunts him is the only way to find out, then so be it. Thorny (Annie's brother) is a character you are unable to decide if you like him or not and also whether you want him to navigate his path through the story or not. We know that Joe has arrived in Arnhill with an agenda so we're on our guard from the outset but I love the way that so much of the story is revealed through wonderful character portraits. He was on the outskirts, an outcast who preferred comic books and video games to sports and spent large amounts of time with Annie, his younger sister. Wow, I've been waiting for this, certainly didn't disappoint, absolutely fantastic, this is one to be read again and again, this is one of those books that you can see as your reading like a movie playing out in your mind, can't wait for the next one from C. J Tudor. Now, putting something off limits is often like a red rag to a bull so although the mine has been constantly a no go zone you just know that the young people of the area flock to it like moths to a flame.

Written in the first person, Joe is our narrator, although not a very reliable one. One that is scarred, secretive and full of foreboding. My giddy aunt – do not annoy this author, she will write you into one of her stories and make you suffer. The references to 1992 brought back so many memories as Joe is the same age as me and so the talk about wham bars and Walkmans had me feeling nostalgic. Nothing is revealed too early, keeping us on our toes as to what happens – in both timelines!
