With Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, William Redfield, Will Sampson, Brad Dourif and Marya Small. 45 Years Ago: 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' Becomes an Instant Classic. A philosophical journey is shared between the doctor and patient, and it pushes the doctor to confront his own anxieties. The setting is also not as dark as the scary cells in The Silence of the Lambs. I tell you this story because, in a way, throwing that bag of stuff off the bridge is the best analysis I can make of Kesey's book. From the first 30 minutes, every character's personality and state of mind is indicated to us. When the jurisdiction on the psych ward gets controlled by dictatorial, forceful, dangerous people because of the uncontrollable power thirst of the management, the rebellion and chaos are inevitable! There's no overacting here, every performance is understated in their own unique way. The Shining just sticks... on 12/20/2011. On one side, there's McMurphy, violent, aggressive but not crazy; on the other, Ratched, so used to getting her way that she resorts to desperate measures when challenged by her new patient.
